St. Peter’s Teen Center hosts exhibit on Cape Verdean whalers

As they stalked the migration paths of the whales they hunted, Azoreans, Cape Verdeans, and Brazilians formed migratory paths of their own, some of which led directly to Dorchester.

The New Bedford Whaling Museum opened its traveling exhibition on Lusophone – that’s Portuguese speaking – people at the Catholic Charities’ Teen Center at St. Peter’s Church at 278 Bowdoin St. in Dorchester on Saturday, June 21. It runs through Thursday.

They seek to fight youth violence

Supporters of a teen center in Dorchester’s Bowdoin-Geneva neighborhood urged civic leaders Tuesday morning to help them raise $1 million. The money would be used to continue the center’s middle school program and help quell youth violence by giving young people opportunity and hope.

Hull’s Sunset Point camp readies for another summer

HULL — Every summer for 60 years, Joe and Doris Menice watched campers from the Sunset Point Camp walk by their Nantasket Road home, each sporting a camp-issued red T-shirt, bound for nearby Nantasket Beach.

The sights and sounds of jubilant campers have been a summer fixture in this seaside community for more than 90 years. However, in 2009, summertime came but the campers did not.

Catholic Charities North this year received $34,000 in grants and donations for its Fishing Community Fund from local and international seafood companies and their service suppliers _ a 25 percent increase over last year.

Sailors' Snug Harbor, a grantmaking organization began in 1852 by Capt. Josiah Bacon as a retirement home for Quincy sailors, chipped in with a $10,000 grant. Other donors include American Seafoods Group, Arista Industries, Bama Seafoods Products, High Liner Foods, American Refrigeration, Ipswich Shellfish, National Fish & Seafood and others.
