‘He is truly an inspiration’: Sixteen-Year-Old Lynn Resident Earns HiSet Diploma
At just sixteen years old, longtime Lynn resident, Aynjel, earned his diploma in September from Catholic Charities North’s HiSet program.
A year or so ago, he never imagined he would be where he is today.
“I had been to several different high schools in Lynn,” said Aynjel, who dropped out of school during his sophomore year. “I had a lot of challenges and there were definitely times I felt lost.”
When Aynjel learned about Catholic Charities HiSet program in Lynn, and the flexible, supportive nature of the class, he promptly signed up. Looking back now, he said this decision was pivotal in lending him a sense of direction and a strong support system he knows he can depend on.
“My teachers and the program staff were always pushing and motivating me, even when I would fail,” said Aynjel. “They helped me to keep going and stay in a good headspace.”
Despite being young, Aynjel is already working with Catholic Charities staff to research community college programs and potential career paths; his interests range from cosmetology to surgical tech school to criminal justice. While he isn’t sure what he wants to pursue, he said he is grateful for the opportunity to choose, now that he has his diploma
“Aynjel is one of the most hardworking students I’ve worked with,” said Catholic Charities North’s Youth Program Manager, Colleen Caro. “He truly is an inspiration.”
When asked what has most motivated him over the course of the last year, Aynjel replies: “My family. My dad didn’t get to finish high school. He left in the 9th grade, so I am proud to have done it and to keep going.”
