“They have given joy and happiness every year:’ Teen Center Unveils Plaque Honoring Late Mayor Menino
This week, Catholic Charities’ leadership team, board members, and members of the Menino family gathered at the Teen Center to unveil a plaque honoring the late Mayor Menino. The plaque represents Catholic Charities’ immense gratitude to the Menino family for their ongoing partnership and generosity maintaining the annual Christmas Eve distribution at the Teen Center for 30 years.
Senior Vice President for Government and Community Relations, Larry Mayes, who worked with Mayor Menino as Chief of Human Services for many years, opened the event with an emotional tribute to the late Mayor Menino, speaking of his incredible compassion, leadership, and above all, his love for his family and the Boston community.
“He was an unbelievable teacher, and he knew a great place when he saw it,” said Larry. “He believed in the Teen Center, and he knew it was a game changer.”
Turning to the Menino family, he said, “I want to thank you and your family for all that you do and continue to do for the Teen Center and the kids who have lived up to the Menino standard. This place has been amazing and a true beacon in this community.”
Located in the Bowdoin-Geneva neighborhood on the ground of St. Peter’s Parish, the Teen Center is a safe haven offering after-school and summer programs that include academic enrichment, sports and recreation, wellness resources, and support services to hundreds of Boston’s youth. It’s a place where members are encouraged to challenge themselves and strive toward self-discipline, time management, and academic growth.
Yadhira Cardoso-Mendes, a senior at Roxbury Prep, who will be attending Northeastern University this fall, is a testament to the powerful impact of the Teen Center and Menino family’s partnership. Having been a member of the Teen Center since 5th grade, Yadhira said she has witnessed the incredible generosity of the Meninos over the years and will forever be grateful for the support she has found at the center.
“I have seen firsthand the incredible impact the Menino family has had,” said Yadhira. “They have given joy and happiness every year, especially during Christmas. On behalf of all the students at the teen center, I want to express my deepest gratitude for all you’ve done for us.”
