Catholic Charities North this year received $34,000 in grants and donations for its Fishing Community Fund from local and international seafood companies and their service suppliers _ a 25 percent increase over last year.

Sailors' Snug Harbor, a grantmaking organization began in 1852 by Capt. Josiah Bacon as a retirement home for Quincy sailors, chipped in with a $10,000 grant. Other donors include American Seafoods Group, Arista Industries, Bama Seafoods Products, High Liner Foods, American Refrigeration, Ipswich Shellfish, National Fish & Seafood and others.

Catholic Charities North provides basic assistance to those in need, as well as sponsoring education programs, English as a second language classes and a variety of family support programs.
